Every law office adopting AI-assisted drafting now needs someone who can verify sources, catch hallucinated citations, and maintain the professional standard the attorney’s signature guarantees. Courts are already sanctioning lawyers who submit unverified AI-generated material. The machine can write. It cannot know.
That creates an opening for a new kind of legal professional: someone who can combine careful reading, precise document work, technological fluency, and disciplined human verification.
No prior legal experience is required. Strong reading and writing matter more. Spanish fluency is valuable but not required.
AI makes language faster. It does not make language less exacting.
The Method
Law is made of language. A changed word, omitted deadline, misplaced qualification, or misunderstood instruction can change the result. The course begins with careful reading, vocabulary, and control of the document — not with AI prompts.
Read
Learn to scan dense material, locate controlling information, distinguish the essential from the incidental, and preserve comprehension while increasing speed.
Build
Learn practical document production: typing, Microsoft Word, PDF handling, formatting, file organization, professional email, and reliable execution.
Verify
Learn to use AI without surrendering judgment — through closed-universe drafting, source control, citation checking, and attorney-supervised review.
What you will practice
Reading for legal work
Extract names, dates, deadlines, issues, instructions, and controlling language from realistic case materials.
Professional document production
Use Microsoft Word and PDF tools to create organized, polished, editable legal work product.
Texas legal workflow
Understand cause numbers, court structure, basic filing mechanics, service, rejected filings, and the lifecycle of a document.
AI-assisted drafting
Use structured, source-controlled workflows rather than asking a machine to invent an answer. You control the authorities. The machine writes within them. Hallucination detection becomes structural, not guesswork.
Verification and professional responsibility
Check every factual assertion, quotation, citation, name, date, and requested form of relief before attorney review.
The machine can write. It cannot know.

Why this exists
The legal market is splitting. Firms that adopt AI-forward workflows will need trained professionals who can operate them — remotely, reliably, across jurisdictions. Firms that ignore these tools risk falling behind. People who trust them uncritically produce errors faster.
The gap between those two failures is where this course lives.
The Rio Grande Valley already produces talented bilingual graduates who understand this community and can work across languages, cultures, and jurisdictions. What is often missing is a practical bridge between academic ability and the exacting workflows of a modern law office.
This is not a complete paralegal-certification program. It is an intensive introduction to the habits, tools, and supervised workflows on which serious legal support work depends. The founding cohort will also help determine what comes next: advanced training, supervised project work, a referral network, or some combination of the three.

Your instructor
Jonathon A. Muñoz holds a BA in Philosophy from Georgetown University (Ryan Medal) and a JD with Distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he received faculty awards in Constitutional Law and Criminal Procedure. He has served as a federal judicial law clerk in the Southern District of Texas, a staff attorney at the Thirteenth Court of Appeals, an assistant district attorney, and an adjunct instructor of Constitutional Law at UTRGV.
His teaching method begins with the fundamentals that technology cannot replace: close reading, vocabulary, document control, and clear written instructions. He has taught Constitutional Law and standardized-test preparation, developed legal-training materials, and built AI-assisted workflows for active litigation. He personally reviews every assignment.
